The Yoga Experience
Just minutes from Cortland, NY, your host leads a practice that blends Hatha, Vinyasa, and Yin — adapting to every level in the group, so nobody is left guessing what comes next.
Every session your host leads draws from four branches of practice. Tap each one to learn what it is and why it’s there.
Yoga Styles & Branches
“Yoga” isn’t one thing — it’s a family of practices, each suited to a different body and mood. Your host blends these based on who’s in the room:
- Hatha: Slow, foundational postures held with steady breath — the gentlest entry point for beginners.
- Vinyasa: Breath-synchronized flow between poses, building heat and cardiovascular endurance.
- Ashtanga: A fixed, physically demanding sequence that builds strength, discipline, and stamina over time.
- Yin: Passive poses held for minutes at a time, targeting connective tissue and inducing deep relaxation.
- Restorative: Fully prop-supported postures with almost no exertion — pure nervous-system recovery.
- Kundalini: Combines posture, breath, and chant to build energy and focus in a single flowing sequence.
Pranayama — Breath Work
Pranayama means “control of life-force through breath.” Different techniques are used for different effects — your host chooses based on where the group needs to go, calmer or more energized:
- Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing): Balances the two sides of the nervous system, easing anxiety and scattered focus.
- Kapalabhati (Skull-Shining Breath): Sharp, active exhales that clear the lungs and energize the mind — used to wake the body up.
- Bhramari (Bee Breath): A humming exhale that soothes the nervous system almost immediately — often used to release tension or headaches.
- Ujjayi (Ocean Breath): A soft throat constriction that creates an ocean-like sound, used throughout flow practice to build heat and inner focus.
- Sitali (Cooling Breath): Drawing air in through a curled tongue to physically cool the body and calm agitation or frustration.
Chants & Mantras
Sound is vibration, and vibration affects the body — chanting slows the exhale, engages the same nerve pathway as deep relaxation, and gives a wandering mind something steady to hold onto:
- Om (Aum): Considered the root sound of the universe; the long, droning exhale it requires naturally slows breathing and heart rate.
- Gayatri Mantra: Traditionally chanted for clarity and wisdom — the steady Sanskrit rhythm helps entrain the mind toward a meditative state.
- Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu: A compassion mantra — “may all beings be happy and free” — that shifts attention away from self-focused stress toward connection.
You don’t need to know the words in advance — your host leads every chant line by line.
Meditation
Meditation is trained attention, and different methods train it differently — your host will guide the type that fits the session:
- Mindfulness Meditation: Observing thoughts and sensations without judgment — used to reduce stress and build present-moment awareness.
- Mantra Meditation: Silently repeating a sound or phrase to quiet mental chatter and deepen focus.
- Loving-Kindness (Metta): Directing goodwill toward yourself and others — used to cultivate compassion and ease negative emotion.
- Body Scan: Systematically moving attention through the body to release physical tension — often used at the close of a session.
- Breath-Focused: Anchoring attention to the breath itself — the simplest entry point, and the foundation the other styles build on.
Ayurveda Balance
Yoga’s sister science, Ayurveda ("The Science of Life"), matches your practice to your constitution (Dosha):
- Vata (Air & Ether): Creative and energetic, but prone to anxiety — balanced by warmth, grounding, and routine.
- Pitta (Fire & Water): Intelligent and driven, but prone to anger — balanced by cooling practice and relaxation.
- Kapha (Earth & Water): Loyal and calm, but prone to lethargy — balanced by stimulation and movement.
